Nine advanced manufacturing companies made the Tech Top 40 list this year.

New Haven and Fairfield Counties host many of the state’s fastest growing tech companies, according to a new listing. The Marcum Tech Top 40 is also strong on software and advanced manufacturing firms.

The Connecticut Technology Council, in partnership with accounting firm Marcum LLP, compiles a list of the fastest growing technology companies in the state each year, measured by revenue growth over the last four years. Finalists are private and public companies with at least $3 million in annual revenue. This year, eleven of the 40 are software companies. The next most successful category is advanced manufacturing, featuring nine companies.

Between them, Fairfield and New Haven Counties are home to 28 of the finalists this year.

The list is always dominated by small, up-and-coming companies, which can more easily achieve dynamic growth percentages, because they start from a small base.

But the Technology Council’s Mike Scricca said not all the finalists are small or unknown.

"This year's list is interesting, because there are seven companies that are greater than a billion dollars making the list," Scricca told WNPR. "Priceline, for example, and Alexion have made the list for the last several years, and everybody knows those brands and is familiar with them. But this year, we've got some new companies: the Barnes Group, a pretty large employer; Harman International in Stamford; Amphenol; Hexcel Corporation; and Gartner, which is pretty well-known to those folks in the IT world. I think it says something about the big companies' recovery from the recession."

The overall winner and the winners in each industry category will be announced on September 24 at an event in Wallingford.
