MGM has emphasized that the capacity of the hotel will not change.
MGM Resorts International has announced plans to reconfigure the hotel it will build as part of its new casino complex in Springfield, Massachusetts.
The original plans called for a 25-story glass tower with 250 rooms at the corner of State Street. The revision moves the hotel to the corner of Main and Howard, and reduces it to a six-story structure.
MGM has emphasized that the capacity of the hotel will not change, and that the alterations will not reduce the overall cost of the $800 million development.
A statement from Michael Mathis, CEO of MGM Springfield described the change as an improvement. "We have never lost sight of how important it is to integrate our development and its unique design needs with this historic New England downtown," the statement said. "We think the changes along Main Street and this new layout is more in line with a true downtown mixed-use development that will make MGM Springfield the premier urban resort in the industry."
The revised plans will need to be submitted to the city of Springfield and to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission for their approval.
