PurePower Jet Engine Goes Into Service

Pratt & Whitney’s long-awaited new commercial jet engine went into service Wednesday. The PurePower geared turbo fan engine is installed on the first Airbus A320neo aircraft delivered to German airline Lufthansa.

The engine is designed to be more than 15 percent fuel efficient  than conventional engines, as well as reducing noise and emissions. Pratt has made a $10 billion investment to bring it to the marketplace, including installing a revolutionary new assembly line at its Middletown engine center.

Airbus experienced last minute delays in delivery of the new jet, due in part to documentation issues with the engine, but this week's delivery to Lufthansa will be the first of 116 aircraft for that airline alone.

Pratt has a backlog of orders for 7,000 PurePower engines. In addition  to Airbus, the engine will also be used on the Bombardier C Series, Mitsubishi Regional Jet, Embraer E2 EJet and Irkut’s MC-21.
