Meriden Lab Signs Partnership on Zika Virus

Protein Sciences' Meriden facility

Protein Sciences, the Meriden-based vaccine maker, is setting its sights on the Zika virus. 

The company, which is best known for its Flublok product, says it has entered a partnership with a foundation and a biotech company from Argentina, which will help fund and develop a potential new vaccine. 

Protein Sciences says it's already been working on a Zika vaccine since February, but the new partnerships will accelerate its progress.

Webster Profits Dip

The parent of Waterbury’s Webster Bank has seen a slight fall in earnings in the first quarter, saying its expansion into the Boston market has added to expenses.

Webster Financial Corporation began a move into Beantown in December, taking over 14 branches there and in nearby communities in eastern Massachusetts. CEO James Smith described the expansion as gaining momentum.

GE Giving Declines in Connecticut

Hearst Media reports that the imminent departure of General Electric is already having an impact on nonprofits in Fairfield County that could previously rely on support from the corporate giant.

United Way of Western Connecticut is reported to have laid off five people, and another United Way, of Coastal Fairfield County, says it is anticipating a loss of a million dollars in the coming years.
