Health insurer Aetna is raising its minimum wage. The Hartford-based company announced that from April of this year, its lowest paid workers will receive $16.00 an hour.
That’s up from a minimum of around $12.00 now. They’ll also be eligible for more generous benefits packages.
CEO Mark Bertolini said the move is an effort to stem turnover, reduce recruitment costs, and boost productivity. He garnered praise from Governor Dannel Malloy, but in fact, the change will have the biggest effect on call center and claims processing workers who are employed outside of Connecticut.
Airline Could Lay Off at Bradley
United Airlines has announced that it’s mulling major layoffs that could affect Bradley International Airport. The airline said it is considering outsourcing functions like baggage handling and airport-based customer service as a cost-cutting measure.

United is currently in talks with union representatives over the move, which could mean as many as 2,000 layoffs. Bradley is among the airports where layoffs would take effect.
