Former East Haven police Officer Dennis Spaulding was sentenced on Thursday to five years in federal prison for federal civil rights violations. Spaulding was convicted October 21 of every charge brought by government prosecutors. That includes conspiracy to violate civil rights, deprivation of rights for making arrests without probable cause, obstruction of justice and use of unreasonable force. He faced a maximum sentence of 20 years.
Metro-North: Still Some Delays
Metro-North Railroad trains ran on a regular schedule with some 15-minute weather-related delays during this morning’s commute after a computer glitch at Grand Central Terminal caused massive delays Thursday evening. Governor Dannel Malloy said he was outraged that any maintenance procedure would be performed on the signal control system during the peak evening commuter rush hour.
Governor Malloy Unveils Climate Change Center
Governor Malloy unveiled the new Institute for Community Resilience and Climate Adaptation during an announcement at the Avery Point Campus of the University of Connecticut. The center is an all-purpose resource for municipalities, individuals and other private and public groups seeking assistance to plan for climate change.
U.S. Senator Blumenthal Advocates for Veterans Bill
The bill includes restoring a cut to cost-of-living adjustments for military retirees and money to help the federal VA eliminate its claims backlog. It also expands benefits for caregivers. The legislation also includes several provisions written by Sen. Blumenthal.
Nautilus Turns 60
The Nautilus was christened in Groton on January 21, 1954, by first lady Mamie Eisenhower before a crowd of 20,000 people.The submarine was built by Electric Boat. It could travel faster and farther than any other submarine, and would become the first ship to cross the North Pole in 1958.
