Thousands of troops are home from Iraq - and soon from Afghanistan - to a country that, in many ways, barely noticed they were gone. These wars have been fought at such a distance from a public that was told to “go shopping” to support a war effort, that we don’t have the impact of similar returns from Vietnam or World War 2.

Tonight WNPR’s Coming Home Project presents a live Where We Live at Torp Theater on the campus of Central Connecticut State University. CCSU has played an active role in honoring veterans, including an active chapter on their campus. We’ll be there to talk to vets about their experiences - and their readjustment to life in Connecticut. I’ll be joined by Lucy Nalpathanchil, the WNPR reporter who’s been leading this project.

We’ll talk with a CCSU professor who is working with students to compile stories from Vietnam Vets, and we’ll hear from a veteran who is writing about his own experience. Finally we’ll hear from a veteran who is returning to Iraq later this month...to teach dance.

First we’ll check in with Congressman Joe Courtney, who is continuing his fight to keep the Groton sub base open... again. The last Base Closing and Realignment Commission, or BRAC, was in 2005... and state lawmakers made a case for the base then. But can they do it again?
