It could be ‘one and done’ for hall of fame coach Jim Calhoun at the University of Saint Joseph.
The Hartford Courant is reporting that the men’s basketball coach doesn’t know if he’ll return to the bench for a second season with the Blue Jays and that he may be meeting with the school this week to discuss his future.
“He’s kind of operating at full speed as if he’s going to be back to coach at St. Joe’s for a second year, but he hasn’t committed to anything yet,” said Mike Anthony, a sports reporter at the Courant. “I’m sure the opinions of his wife and family members will play largely into his decision.”
Calhoun told Connecticut Public Radio when he took the job that it was too good to pass up -- even though he said his wife Pat thought it was a bad idea.
“I’m seduced by the game I love,” said Calhoun in a September interview. “I’m seduced by the idea of teaching. I’m seduced by the idea of watching kids grow and seeing how athletics can fit into that. And so, if you want to call me an addict, I’m an addict to the game that did so much for my life.”
Calhoun retired in 2012 after leading the University of Connecticut to a total of three national championships. He returned to coaching to help the University of Saint Joseph establish a men’s basketball program – the school was previously an all-women’s college.
The conversation about the Calhoun’s future started after the Blue Jays lost their conference championship game to Albertus Magnus College Saturday – effectively ending their season.
The 2018-19 campaign was the inaugural season for USJ men’s basketball.
